Mazatlan: Safe or Not?

We are contemplating going to Mazatlan this December, but I have heard that it may no longer be as safe as it once was, due to violence from Sinaloa drug cartels. What do you think?

Thanks,
Al F.

Physically, you will be safe. But you will be fully aware of the drug violence--army checkpoints, federal drug police dressed in black and body armor driving around in jeeps with mounted machine guns.

It is as safe as any major American or Canadian city. I live in Mazatlan 6 months out of the year. me and my family never feel unsafe.. We shop, go to the beach, the movies, sightseeing...never a problem or a worry or even a thought about safetly. Look at what is happening in US, just the other day in NYC and in Auroroa CO . The best advice is to keep your travels in well known popular areas all along the beach, historic center, the marina area. You will find warm friendly people. The US media blows it way out of proportion. Come and enjoy. You will love it!

Just got back from Mazatlan and RAC was right. It felt totally safe, except it gives one pause when several jeeps and pickups with mounted machine guns come roaring by with lights flashing. I spoke with several locals who were quite defensive about the undeserved reputation that Mazatlan has in the U.S. - apparently tourism is noticeably down recently.
