Marlin in Cabo

Anybody have an experience with specific charter boats in Cabo. It will be 3 or 4 of us and we will charter the whole boat. Have done this many times in Hawaii but first time in Cabo. Thanks.

Dear eyelaser:

Check www.tripadvisor.com for fishing info. Their forums have local experts who will give you recs, or do a search.

Good luck and have fun in Cabo.

Eyelaser,

In the late '90's we fished Cabo many times, receiving a couple of AFTCO/Billfish Foundation awards for releasing so many striped marlin ... we usually fished with Pisces Fleet. I recommend you get one of the larger boats (31 ft and larger) for the most experienced skippers ... their best skipper, Benito Agundez, is on one of their 35 ft boats last I heard ... http://www.piscessportfishing.com/

Another top-notch fleet is Picante, with 31 and 35 ft Cabo sportfishers, very fast boats ... http://www.picantesportfishing.com/

Finally I met the owner of this fleet down there and helped them get started with tag/release ... nice guy with two good boats ... http://www.reeleasysportfishing.com/

What time of year are you going?

I will be going over the xmas holidays. Anything else I should know or expect.

December is typically one of the top three months for big numbers of striped marlin, so a good time. Christmas week will be extremely busy though so maybe line up a boat for at least 1-2 days before you go.

As for "anything else", pretty much every individual who approaches you and starts a conversation is a time-share roper trying to talk you into a "short" presentation about the miracle of shared ownership. They get a couple of bucks for every dude they rope in so will tell you pretty much anything to get you in for the presentation. Cabo is the worst place for this I've ever seen, so just shrug it off and say no.

If you get burned out on the wildness of Cabo you can rent a car for a day and head north an hour to Todos Santos, a small village with a laid-back groove. Cafe Santa Fe has the best food I've yet eaten in Baja. Or head east and north to the East Cape (about a 2 hour drive) and stop by some of the fishing hotels there ... fishing is poor on this side in Dec because of winds but it's an enjoyable place for a change of pace. Todos Santos is a better choice for a day trip though.

In Hawaii did you fish at Kona? We used to go on the "Sea Genie II" with Gene Vander Houk for blue marlin in the summer months.

I fished with Jeff Fay, the Humdinger many times in August. Caught 676#, 307# blue marlin and 150# yellowfin tuna and my son a 176# blue marlin. Thanks again for all the info. I think I will book a while in advance to make sure I get a time early in the trip.
