This is not quite in the area you want to be, but I have enjoyed staying at the Best Western Majestic which is right on the Zocalo. Its a great place to be, the hotel has a good roof top restaurant and there is a Metro stop in the Zocalo so you could get around quickly. I checked rates- their site says 95.00 us per night for two single beds. On Orbitz it was 65.00 us for the same. Not a bad deal for a reasonable place in a good location. Hope this helps, I am sure others know of other options.

Thank you will check it out. Prefer queen beds if possible. Rates are right.

Darlene, I agree - rates can be outrageous when we do the conversion. Last March, we stayed at the Hotel Catedral. It's in the zocalo area, though, not in the Reforma area. The rate was about $50 USD and we thought it was pretty good, especially for the price. They have a website - http://www.hotelcatedral.com.mx. We're planning to stay there again in February.

I would second the opinion for the Hotel Catedral. I found it an excellent choice for the money with many amenities not normally included in the price range.

You can't do better than the Hotel Catedral, one block from the zocalo, on the booksellers street. It's clean, and moderate, say $35 US a night. Be sure to get a room on a high floor with a view to the Catedral. Open your window and listen to the music from the zocalo. It's a very special experience the tourists staying in the Zona Rosa will miss.

The Maria Christina, at 31 Rio Lerma, is the area you want, in the "Rio" area just on the other side of Reforma from the Zona Rosa, not far from the Angel. We have been staying at this colonial-style hotel with a small garden for over 25 years, and it is very reliable. The last rate I was quoted (early December stay) was USD 74 for a double with a matrimonial bed, or 96 for a junior suite with 2 matrimonials or a king and a garden view. Rooms are very clean with nice baths for this price range, there is a restaurant and bar on the premises, and the aforementioned garden makes a nice refuge from touring. Good taxi drivers, very convenient location.

I agree 100% with the Maria Christina hotel recommendation. I stayed there in September and found it to be a very good hotel with a great location. The restaurant has really good inexpensive specials with several courses most days. The Zona Rosa is within walking distance and you are near the bus line to go downtown or to the museum district. Also, this area seems to be safe for tourists and everyone else.
