does it make sense to bring in any liquor with us if we wish something beside tequila and cervezas?

NO.

If Mexican selections can't satisfy, then you're too picky.

Unless you have high end Cognac or Single Malt Scotch whiskey tastes, I would agree that it is not worth the effort.
Try the great Anejo sipping tequilas or some of the local (and Chile/Argentine) wines.

No it doesn't make sense!! I remember you asked about Puerto Vallarta in another post. If that's where you are going, they have everything you want. It's not just tequila and beer fer goodness sake.

You can buy (for example) cheap Mexican made vodka, or spring for Absolute or Stoli basically at any corner store. At the larger supermercado there is an even bigger selection. I remember one year my friend was set on Beefeaters (or was it Bombay?) gin and that took a bit more looking around, but even that we found easy enough.

You'll find a variety of things in MX aside from tequilla and beer. Surprisingly, depending on the region-they can be brandy or rum drinkers. The rum there is of decent quality. American whiskeys can be found here and there & not at all that great of a mark up. The wines of the Baja-MX area are around and are OK.

If you like whiskey, take a bottle and save the inconvenience and cost.

Plus it will give you space in the suitcase to bring other liquor home

what's inconvenient? isn't it easier to go to the corner store then haul extra weight in your luggage? as for cost, i find most brands priced similar to home.
