Yes, karenlf, you'll be glad you had a car. Drive down to Puntarenas (couple of hours) and take the ferry across. Check the ferry schedule at

Recheck it closer to time as it changes fairly often. Typically, you need to be at the ferry 30 min-1 hour before departure. The crossing takes about 1.5 hour. Then you'll have another hour plus to get to Montezuma. It will take the better part of a day.
At one time, there was an 8:30 a.m. departure. Another one about 10:00 or 10:30. Good luck! Have a great time. Definitely need a car! I'm jealous! Love that area. .

Btw, I'll never forget our first time to take that ferry (it's the one to Paquera). We had trouble finding the ferry terminal, for Pete's sake! Didn't know on which side of the spit it was. Go all the way to the end and make a right.

It's been 2 years since we were on highway 21 south to Paquera, but someone said recently that it had not improved. I doubt that part of the country is a high priority. Deep, deep ruts--for a LONG distance. Good luck with everything!
