Just returned from Cancun
I got some good information before my visit so I thought I'd return the favor a post some info for others who are going in the future.

We stayed at Le Meridien. It is a lovely hotel. The staff is very nice and the service was excellent. The size of the hotel and the amount of amenities were just right--everything you could want without it being so big that it was impersonal. The restuarant, Aioli, is quite good but expensive (we spent $150). However, the breakfast buffet is wonderful and a relative bargain ($15). I mentioned it was our 10th anniversary at check in and the following day we were surprised by the delivery to our room of two pieces of chocalate cake and a congratulatory message. I thought that was very thoughtful. We used the spa and got massages and facials-- again great service. I was very satisfied with Le Meridien and would recommend it to anyone who is considering it without hesitation.

Since they were next door we also checked out the Ritz Carlton and the JW Marriott. Which of the 3 hotels you prefer will depend on your taste. I found the Ritz Carlton to be cold. The lighting was low, a lot of antique furniture around, the beach (isn't that why you go to Cancun?) isn't really featured. The decor would be great for Paris or London but it just didn't fit Cancun.

I loved the JW Marriot. I would rate it above Le Meridien. The pools and interconnecting canals were really well done. It made you want to spend time outdoors just as much as indoors. Inside, they had a lady rolling cigars and a person playing sax (in Le Merdien they play piano every night). I understand the Marriot just put in a 30,000 sq. ft. spa. So I'd rate Marriot #1, Le M #2, and the Ritz #3, again just my humble opinion.

A couple of restuarant comments. After seing others recommend it, we ate at La Habicuela (sic) in downtown Cancun. The food was quite good (especially the quitacoacha (sic) crepes). I highly recommend their flambeayed desserts.

But the restuarant I want to tell y'all about is next door to La Habicuela, called Labna. Wow! Great great Yucatecan food. Beautiful place, nice decor, AC, and the prices are very low (< $10). It has just opened. Go before everybody else finds out about this place.

Hope this post helps y'all. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer.

Dear Diane:

The restuarants are located north of Palapas Park on Calle Margaritas. All the locals know where La Habicuela is and can point you in the right direction. Save some money and just take the bus into Cancun (6 pesos or 75 cents per person) and then take a taxi to the restuarant (12 pesos). If you take the taxi directly from the hotel it's set you back $10-12.

Dear Ann:

I considered FA Grand Coral Beach and yes I did see it when I was in Cancun. From the outside I can tell it's a very nice hotel. The concern for me was it's location. It's on the end of the hotel zone where there are lots of stores, American-style restuarants, and bars. I was looking for a quiet somewhat secluded vacation and wanted to avoid the MTV Spring Break type crowd as much as possible.

Have fun you two, and talk to the people. They are lovely and very helpful.
