Just Back- Don't Miss NW Argentina
I have found these forums to be very helpful for planning my trip- so I thought that I would make a few recommendations.
The first part of our trip we chose to go fly to Salta (from BA) to explore the province. I can't say enough about the experience albeit short (3 nights and 3 days). After reading the forums on the various sites we chose to hire a guide to drive us to various sites in the province, and boy am I glad that I did! Our guide Martin Alamo, was completely invaluable- his english was superb as was his understanding of the history of the area. We visited Cachi, Tilcara, Purmamarca, and Salta. The area is one of the prettiest that I have seen anywhere- where else in one day (road to Cachi) can you see jungle, painted hills, green ravines that look like Hawaii, to rolling plains, to catus forests in the desert. Quite remarkable. Martin's help navigating the roads and the towns really made it enjoyable- if we would have tried to do this on our own it would have been very difficult- washed out roads (rivers) high alt. roads with no guardrails, horses and riders on the roads, no stops with phones for emergencies (or cell reception)and no visibly marked gas stations or ATMs.
I highly recommend that you consider adding this incredibly beautiful beautiful part of the world. I would also give Martin wholehearted support as a guide. You can contact him at [email protected].
Hope this helps in your planning! Rebekah
