Been to both places and both are nice but IM is a lot closer and cheaper to get to and has a great beach (Norde Beach) You can take a tourist boat (the dolphin express) or better yet take a taxi or bus to Puerto Juraze and take the water ferry accross and spend the whole day. You can find out a lot more by visiting isla-mujeres.net--pay attention to the tool bar on the left.

Ron,
I feel it depends on how long you will be in the area. If you are just going to be in Cancun (or wherever) for less than a week, I agree with Ana - it's not worth a day trip. But if you are going to be around for a week plus, it is quaint and a very nice change from the bustling of the Cancun area. I'd go down the coast to Playa del Carmen and/or Akumal or fly or take the ferry to Cozumel before I'd go to IM.

Thanks for your input Nancy. I'll be in Cancun / Playa Del Carmen for 10 days. Spending 6 nights at the Paradisus Riviera and 4 Nights at the Riu Palace. Last time I was in Cancun we went to Cozumel for the day so I thought about doing something different. If we went to IM, we would do it during our stay at the Paradisus since its closer to Cancun.

Ooh, I'm jealous Ron!
Since you seem like an out-and-about kinda guy, I'd really urge you to go on down the coast on hwy 307 to Akumal, Tulum and Tankah.
We spent 4 nights in Akumal before going over to Cozumel for 2 weeks, and there is so much to do and see down that way. If you like ruins, you can go to Tulum, but unless you REALLY like ruins, I'd recommend renting a car in Playa, go to Tulum for 2 or 3 hours in the morning while it's still relatively cool and before the Cancun buses get there. Then you could go to Akumal for lunch and lounge around on the beach OR go to Casa Cenote (close to Tankah) for a snorkel and lunch there at the beach bar/restaurant.
If you really like the beach and snorkeling or diving, you could easily spend one entire day in Akumal. Arrive early, have breakfast at Turtle Cafe and stake out a spot on the beach. You can operate from there and get tours, eat, etc., easily within walking distance and sight of your things. Have fun!!!
