Traveling to CR in 2 weeks. I know the water is suppose to be potable, but to be safe I am working on getting a "travel pack" (azithromycin, or some other antibiotic and some anti-diarrheal) from my doc just in case. Has anyone had any issues on a visit? Also, am I correct in assuming that no special immunizations are required to travel to CR?

No shots required. We have drunk the water everywhere without any problems. I wouldn't worry about it. At BdC, they told us not to drink the water in the cabins, but they had drinkable water at the bar that we filled our water bottles with. We did brush our teeth with cabin water without any problems.

Never hurts to have with you but no have never had issues. Never shots either. Drank the water, ate the fruit & salads etc.

I always have Imodium in my travel kit just because I've gotten violently ill in Mexico. Never had that problem in CR though. Have eaten all the same food as tully, and probably at most of the same places!

I have not had any issues with food or water in CR either. I agree that imodium is a good idea for any trip (just to be prepared...). Pain relievers (Tylenol, etc...) is also a good idea just in case. I took a Cipro prescription with me on both of my CR trips but never needed it, and as it now turns out that I'm allergic to Cipro, I guess it was a good thing I never tried to take it in CR!

I think Hepatitis A is generally recommended for Costa Rica (although not required). I've also gotten the typhoid vaccine (although this is more for an upcoming Peru trip than for Costa Rica). I think it's also not a bad idea to be current on your tetanus innoculation.
