How safe is Cancun Mexico?

We have planned a trip to Cancun for this Christmas, since then we have heard alot of bad stories. We are taken your children 11 & 15. We are a little concern.

Were the "bad stories" you heard specifically about Cancun? Or are you talking about unrest due to drug cartels and politics going on in some of the larger cities (Mexico City, Juarez, etc.)

IMO Cancun is OK. I've never heard/read of any problems with tourists visiting and doing normal tourist things there.

I haven't been there for two years, but have confidence that if you watch your back and don't venture into dark places late at night you'll be fine. Taxis sound unreliable. They have been known to quick kidnap and make you take money out of your ATM.

On the bright side, The United Nations is having a conference from November 29 to December 10. There will be heightened security at the airport and hotel zone, including police checkpoints. So don't be alarmed by the police presence.

Have fun!!!!!

I would like to request a link to some kind of factual information to verify that "fact". Because I don't believe it is true.

I feel safer in Cancun than in Miami. And like suze, when you say "Cancun" are you talking about staying in a fleabag downtown or in an AI the hotel zone? There is a difference. I agree with erjay. Don't take your kids pub crawling.

We stayed at a Resort 15 miles out Cancun, Adult only, so will not work for kids. The point I took home was to give flight info to Hotel/Resort if large enough one. They will send a shuttle that holds about 10 people and drop us off. It seemed very safe because my name was on the list/ hotel expected me a specific time/date. Of course, resort will entertain kids without even leaving the premises. Be safe and relax.

Use the same common sense you would (hopefully) use in ANY city, and you'll most likely be fine.
