Thinking about a trip in the summer - curious how rainy it is there? August particularly.
How is the national park at Manuel Antonio?

We were there last August and it wasn't as bad as we had it built up to be. We had 4 days where we never saw any rain, and 6 days where it would rain either a couple hours in the afternoon or it would start raining as it got dark. We weren't bothered by it at all. Also MA is very beautiful.

Dear emhg89:
Costa Rica weather is very interesting.
Summer to us here means NO rain, much.
Yesterday, I was in La Fortuna at Arenal and one lady said to me, we just haven't had much summer. Meaning, time without rain.
Winter, means rain and it is purely anyone's guess as to how much.
I had guests here the first week in August and both times they saw Volcano Arenal all day and night without a cloud. THAT is next to impossible.
This week, in pure Summer, it rained in Jaco Beach! NEVER!
In the Central Valley, ie: San Jose, Alajuela, Heredia, etc. We call July and August - like in the states Indian Summer. Rains less here and perhaps more pretty days. September is another story.
Sometimes, it starts raining in the later afternoon or at least after 1:00. That is why our tours all start so early in the a.m. Be up and ready at 6:00. Weddings here are in the mornings too, during OUR winter months.
I vote the first two weeks in August.
My favorite time. This is the rainforest.... its so beautiful when its wet!

We were there at that time last yr...visited Arenal, Samara and MA. It was a wonderful trip, some rain but it never stopped us. We always did get an early am start as if it did rain, it was in the late afternoon. We did not have luck in Arenal with seeing the volcano, but still had fun at our hotel (Arenal Paraiso) and Samara was a great, quiet beach location and we swam everyday. MA was good for the Park and we did the mangrove boat ride (much more built-up than Samara, but spectacular rainforest at the ocean) and ended the trip by rafting the Sarapiqui. It was all lush and as they say "eye-popping" green...go for it! Joyce

Want to add, that we stayed at 2 very special places: in Samara, Villas Kalimba and between MA and San Jose: La Finca Que Ama (where we visited Turu Ba Ri park and my 15 yr old did the Superman canopy cable) Joyce
