Hotel Sugar Beach
We are looking at the Hotel Sugar Beach for September and are wondering how bad the road to the hotel really is especially at night. Also how long will it take to get to the hotel from the Playa Flamingo area?
Thanks for the help.

September can be wet in Guanacaste...the last kilometers into Sugar beach is a kind of hard rock road...you basically will need a 4x4 ...a regular car may have some hard time getting there.
The drive from Flamingo can be around 45 minutes slow!!

Sorry, Luis, have to disagree. The drive to Flamingo is more like 20 or 25 minutes.
Let's break it down. Playa Flamingo to Playa Potrero, less than 10 minutes. From there it's 7km to Hotel Sugar Beach, the last 3km on the rougher road. Potrero to HSB, about 10-15 minutes.

Thank you for the information. We are planning on getting a 4x4.
We are also looking at the Bahia del Sol since it has spa facilities.
We have narrowed it down to Hotel Sugar Beach, Bahia del Sol and Captain Suizo.

Hubby and I stayed at Sugar Beach about two years ago. We loved the hotel and the food there was pretty good. There is a nice restaurant called Marco Polo in the town of Portrero.
When we drove there from Liberia, it took us a long time as the roads were horrible and we didn't know about the "monkey trail" which, according to some people, is a much shorter route.
The road from Portrero to the hotel is AWFUL but I would not let that stop you from staying here.

So for any of you who have stayed at Sugar Beach, can you tell me which rooms are the best for ocean view and privacy? There is a quite a difference in price between the ocean view standard rooms, the suites and the honeymoon suite. Any feedback would be great, we are travelling there soon.
