Never stayed at either, but if you do a search of this site you will see that Don Carlos is recommended often and gets great reviews.

Just type in the search for each of these hotels.

Last time we were there, we walked past Don Carlos and it was beautiful. Old victorian mansion-type place. Take a taxi to restaurants rather than walking at night.

Hi,
I have been to both, and have guests staying at both places. Each have their own lovliness.

My preference is Don Carlos. It is very nice, rooms very nice, lovely gift shop and pretty breakfast and reception area.

Both hotels are about the same walking distance from busy streets. I would say that Don Carlos might be a little quieter, too. Its side street is busy but not as much as the other one.

Santo Thomas did have a small pool or jacuzzi, which is nice, but San Jose is cool and most people don't take time to swim there.....

Another, a few streets out but easy by taxi (and cheap) is Le Bergerac.... I simply love it!

Have a great time!

We are fond of the Don Carlos, particularly its location. Be sure and ask for a quiet room, because some are definitely quieter than others!
