Do an ALL INCLUSIVE! I love the power of the little wrist band - no cash, no credit card, no wallet! Cancun is nice with a side trip to Isla Majures or just a tour with snorkling or parasailing. Any travel agent can hook you up with a sweet All Inclusive deal through FunJet or Apple to the Bahamas, Costa Rica (be sure to ride a Zip Line aka "Canopy Tour"
, St. Thomas, Punta Cana, Roatan Island... and the list goes on - something Carribean or Central American. You're treated like a king and queen, and the spending is handled up front. For even better service in crowds, carry a stack of US one dollar bills for tips, although they are not required, they CAN expedite your service.
If you're not into that, then book a Delta flight to a remote part of the Bahamas called Cat Island. A nice bed and breakfast there is owned and operated by a Cleveland, Ohio couple, and it's called the Island Hopp Inn (island hoppin'). Tom and Kathy Bencin will make you feel right at home, yet provide you with a private house and turn you on to the island's unique flavor. Kathy is an excellent cook, and Tom will either bring home a fresh catch of seafood or invite you to come along and catch your own. I recommend the Wahoo - yum, yum! http://www.islandhoppinn.com/ is their web site.

Cvechko - we enjoy hanging out by the beach, exploring a new culture, enjoying good food, and good nightlife. We don't want anything too secluded.
Ohiofreebird - we did an all-inclusive to Punta Cana and did not enjoy the experience too much. We kind of felt confined bc we're the type of travelers that like to eat/hang-out where the natives do. We really would love to go to Europe since we have about 10 days to travel but can't figure out which places have the best beaches -- of course we're thinking of Greece, but it's just so expensive to go there.
Any other help you could provide, would be greatly appreciated!

don't do an all inclusive
! The LeMeridien in Cancun is beautiful, and because it's French owned, has a bit of European ambiance and is on a beautiful beach. Ask about nearby contruction though, some hotels are being renovated, and it is possible there could be noise.
Playa del Carmen is fun, too, check out La Tortuga or the Lunata hotel -- and Tulum -- I think the Al Cielo (?)hotel gets very good reviews. Tulum is the most bohemian choice of the 3.
All in all a very beautiful area.

A new thought
Quite some time ago, I was able to fly to Bermuda, stay 3 and 1/2 weeks, and cruise back, which took about 3 days....for a nice month-long vacation. This was possible because I obtained from the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, many many names of private home owners who rent rooms. Most have private bathrooms and some have private entrances. It included a huge breakfast. By doing this, I was able to afford a very long stay, explored all the beautiful pink beaches by moped, as well as the restaurants and local spots of interest. We went to secluded beaches for the day, as well as larger more populated beaches such as Horseshoe Bay next to Elbow Beach Hotel. Each night we visited a different hotel for dinner, show, and dancing. We were not confined to one hotel for anything. I believe some of the Bermuda B&B's now have pools, ours didn't then. The B&B does not really fill your need for a romantic hotel, but it allows for splurging on food and everything else.
The cruise back, a last minute decision, was not arranged until we got to Bermuda. Cruise ships often have unsold rooms and will give you a good deal since it is empty anyway. A travel agent on Front St was able to cash in our unneeded flight home, and arrange passage for us.
Now that I am older, I agree with ohiofreebird, loving the all inclusives. But I would consider the Bermuda B&B experience again. I actually repeated the trip for only 10 days another time, without the cruise, and this time I found a private home right across the street from Elbow Beach. As they say, "Bermuda is another world."
