Honduras this week

I'm going to Honduras this week for work and was wondering if anyone has been there and can give any tips. I'll be flying into Tegucigalpa and travelling throughout the country. I've read the State Dept. warnings on travel and stuff but need inside hints on what and what not to do.

Thanks

Well Copan (El Florido de Copan) is worth a visit for the ruins. The bay islands (Utila and Roatan) are good for diving at the end of the (Belize?) reef.Utila is basic, relaxed - Roatan is more up class, livelier). Mainland, Trujillo was a bit of a disappointment.

Tegucigalpa - well I was there before hurricane andrew blew half of it into the Tegus river. It was pretty OK but be careful in the central market.

You should skirt San Pedro Sula which is a shithole and if you cross to the bay islands via La Ceiba and stay in La Ceiba at all you should carry a gun (no, but be careful).

Look for postings on Copan, Bay Islands, Utila, Roatan to whet your appetite.

I forgot, if you go to Trujillo be very cautious about going to the Garifuna part. Apparently there have been loads of armed assaults there. That is not mentioned on the UK FCO but I think it is in the guidebooks. I meant hurricane Mitch and not Andrew.

Maybe you have already left, anyway Tegus was really trashed after the hurricane. I really enjoyed it, but you have to be very careful. Lots of guns and machetes. We were walking downtown and a guy ran up and yanked a necklace of a member of our group and about took her head off. If we had been paying attention to our surroundings this would not have happened. I agree with above, SPS leaves a lot to be desired. Around Tegus I really enjoyed going to El Valle de Los Angeles. Really a senic and relaxing place up in the mountains. Be careful, but your should have a good time.
