Thanks for your recommendation, kja. I will make note of it for a future trip. The proposed Mayan ruins/wildlife trip has morphed into a wildlife only trip (it became clear we were trying to do too much). So the current plan is a Costa Rica only trip, saving Mayan ruins for another time.
That said, we haven't yet booked our trip, having been distracted by the next shiny thing - a river cruise in Russia.

Hi again Kathie.
We are heading to the Yucatan in March. One week in Cozumel, two weeks in Puerto Adventuras and then heading to Merida for a few nights and one night in Chichaniza to get the the ruins first thing in the morning.
We will visit Tulum and Coba while staying in Puerto Adventuras. I will post when I return end of March my two cents worth and give a comparison to Belize ruins.
Three years ago we went to Belize and stayed the first week in San Ignacio, walking distance to the Cahal Peche ruins which we really enjoyed. We also did a very long but wonderful day trip from there to Tikal and another day trip to Caracol as well as a visit to Xunantunich.
We found that there were not many tourists at any of the sights, and they were all similar but unique. We were there in January.
We flew into Belize City and then arranged a car and driver to pick us up to take us to San Ignacio. We really enjoyed it.
As said, I will report back the end of March.
