How to get to Belize from Cancun area?

A group of five will be spending a week in the toll loom area. We are planning to leave there and go to Belize for a few days.

Trying to figure out the best way to get there. We will have a rental car into loom, can we just drive Into Belize with our rental car? Maybe bus
service? We will need to return to the Cancun airport afterwards, so having the rental car would be handy.

Thanks,

Gin

You have to check with your rental car company whether they allow it, and have the correct insurance for Belize (payable at the border).
Fairly easy drive, down through Chetumal.
You can also take the busfrom Chetumal, not sure about Tulum.

I wouldn't want to spend that much time on the road for just a few days in Belize - bad trip math in my opinion. That said, good info here on how to do it:

With such a short time, there's so much to do closer and more convenient to Tulum. You may or may not have been aware of this when focusing on Belize. Coba, Akumal, Lake Bacalar, the Sian Ka'an biosphere, many cenotes...all places to consider seeing from a base in Tulum, if you have not already.
If you do go to Belize from Tulum, though, consider posting a trip report with details here afterwards, to help future posters. Enjoy.

The best way to get to Belize depends on where you want to go in Belize.

If you just want to stay on the mainland, then the car would be the best way to go. Most rental companies don't allow cars to leave Mexico, but I know a couple that do, so check first because I think you will need some extra documents.

If you want to go to the islands, a car will not be much use because you can't take it to the islands and you'll have to find somewhere to park it safely on the mainland.

So if you just go to the islands, there are a few ways to get there...

1. ADO overnight bus from Tulum to Belize City, then water taxi to Ambergris Caye or Caya Caulker.

2. Bus or car to Chetumal, then get the water taxi to AC or CC. You'll have to find somewhere to park the car.

3. Bus or taxi to Corozal, then fly with one of the domestic Belizean airlines to AC or CC.

4. Drive to Chetumal, park the car somewhere and get a Belizean bus to Corozal or BC.

You can get more details about these options on the "BelizeBus" website (google it).

Thanks for the replies. It seems like for us, the easiest thing will be to take Ado bus from Playa Del Carmen to Chetumal then the ferry over Ambergris Caye and back.
