Guanajuato

Anyone know of a nice place to stay in Guanajuato? We're flying into BJX on Monday 26th of Feb. and staying only one night. Something 50 - 70 / night would be good - don't need anything romantic, just a couple friends on this trip, but good margaritas close by would be nice.

I would like info on the safety around Guanajuato. My daughter will be doing a study abroad there and will be arriving alone. Is it better to fly into Lion or Mexico City? Any other info would be appreciated!

lyon is much closer than Mex City, (an hour? drive from Guanajuato?)but flights into Lyon are fewer and usually more expensive. Does your daughter already speak a little Spanish? Bus from Mex City to Guanajuato would be long (4 hrs?) but quite comfortable buses (1st class anyway)cheap and efficient.

We spent 2 weeks last year at a home in the Marfil section of Guanajuato (away from the centro). We felt comfortable there as well as in centro. But, we were careful, as always, as tourists in another city.
We studied Spanish for awhile at Academia Falcon. Thought the area around the school (whatever that nabe is called) was nice. She'll love Guanajuato - it's truly beautiful. Lots of cultural activities happening there in connection with the university. Full of students when u is in session.

Haven't been to Guanajuato myself but my son-in-law is from there. He just got back and flew to Guadalajara, catching a first class bus from there. He flys to either Guadalajara or Morelia rather than Mexico City but if he could afford it he'd rather fly to Leon so he didn't have a long bus ride.

She wants to fly into Leon (BJX) it is much closer and not more expensive than flying into Mexico City if one routes through Dallas or Houston (e.g $408.00 from Houston right now). Likewise it will be much easier and not involve the cost and confusion of getting through Mexico City and busing to Guanajuato. Most programs will make arrangements to pick you up at the airport BTW. If not, it is a bit more than 30 minutes from Leon to Guanajuato in a taxi. As far as saftey, common sense is always advised but it is a very nice city; myself and my family were quite comfortable walking about downtown at night, etc. I also didn't notice the heavy police and military presence I have seen in many parts of Mexico which in my mind indicated, they aren't having much trouble.

Thanks everyone for the tips! Spanish is her major, so the language isn't an issue. They make their own travel arrangements and are responsible for getting themselves to their destination. She will most likely be traveling and arriving alone. That's why I thought it would be better to fly into Leon and navigate the city later after she has been there awhile. She will be studying at the University in Guanajuato.
