Along the Caribbean coast and in the Talmanca mountain range area you are going to see more rain year round. Even more during the rainy season. They just get a lot period.
The northern Pacific is the drier area and gets less accordingly. Central Pacific is slightly wetter.
During the time period you are talking about it will be mostly rain showers in the afternoon.

We last went in Aug for 2 weeks; it really only rained hard for 1 day (the day we arrived on our way to Tamarindo!). After that, it was sporadic in the PM even further south to Dominical. The coast did feel hot and humid; central valley -SJ- was perfect! Many complain about not being able to see Arenal Volcano during the day due to clouds; I suggest a nitetime guided tour. Good luck, have fun!

Before moving here, my favorite time to visit CR was July/August - plenty of places to stay, good prices on rental cars and hotels and a couple of hours of warm rain every day to freshen the place up.

Do it!
Berni

We visited CR twice, both times in August and would not hesitate to go again during the rainy season. The rain is occasional, not steady and we had plenty of sunny days with no rain at all. The only negative is the fact that we were not able to see the Arenal Volcano - it was cloudy and foggy with on and off rain during our two days there. But I hear it is not uncommon for Arenal to be that way even in the dry season.
The weather on the North Pacific coast was consistently better than in other parts of Costa Rica during our trips.

Check out this weather site for Costa Rica. It will give you average rainfall for all areas.
http://www.costarica.com/weather/temperatures/temperatures-rainfall-humidity-geographical-regions.html

Every year is different mind you, we had our first rain last week since December and under normal patterns it would have been in May!
Good Luck
