Good Hotel Near Airport?

Hi, all - i was wondering if anyone can recommend some good hotels near Belize International Airport, something for a first or last night depending on flight times. Just something clean and safe, and maybe some charm would be nice too. Does anyone have any places they can recommend? I've heard Belize City isn't the safest place - something in a pretty safe area would be great. Thanks for any guidance you can give me.

Maybe spend the night at the Belize Zoo or Crooked Tree.

Thanks, RAC - you can spend the night at the zoo? And is Crooked Tree a lodge? How close are these places to the airport? I really appreciate the help.

Yes, the zoo has its own lodging--cabins, dorms, etc. About 1 hour from BZE

Crooked Tree Lodge (in/on the nature reserve of the same name) is about 40 minutes from the airport.

Thanks, I'll check those out. Are there any closer to the airport that you would recommend?

I think this is another option at Crooked Tree (I haven't stayed here) http://www.birdseyeviewbelize.com/

We stayed at Black Orchid when we arrived on a late afternoon flight http://www.blackorchidresort.com/ I remember the food not being great but it served our needs perfectly (20 min from BZE, 45 min to the LOL boat dock in Orange Walk) and I would stay there again.

Thanks, Patty - I've heard some other recommendations for the Black Orchid too. How did you travel from the airport to the Black Orchid? Do most people just get a taxi?

RAC, that's very cool that you can stay at the zoo. I think we want to be a little closer to the airport though. Have you done it?

No, considered it, but ultimately decided to go straight to San Ignacio.
