Fun in BsAs

Hello all,
I have been reading this board and decided to post my question. I'm 23 and hope to travel to BsAs soon, maybe during the January break. I think I'll travel alone, and only stay in BsAs, as the water falls don't interest me.
I have traveled alone before in western Europe, where there is plenty of things to do beside sightseeing. I was able to meet new people and go to night clubs and have fun, even though I was traveling alone.
I know there are plenty of shows and Tango lessons and such in BsAs. But I'm sure like any big city there exists place(clubs,bars...) where college students hang out.
So here's my question, can anyone tell me where would be the coolest places or hang outs for me to meet new people and have fun.

Thanks a bunch,

Annie

Annie,

I am neither a college student nor cool....but I take college students to Buenos Aires regularly, so I know a little about this subject. For more information you might want to check the Thorntree forums on Lonely Planet. Lots of college students post there. Meanwhile, here is a list of starters:

A very cool place: Jet on Costanera Norte near the domestic airport (Aeroparque). This is the kind of place where the bouncer decides who gets in and who does not. Doesn't really get going until well after midnight, but dinner is served earlier, followed by dancing till dawn.

Museum in San Telmo. Wednesday night happy hours extend the whole night....
Museum is huge...3 levels...with several restaurants and bars on each level...

Near Museum is a laid-back bar, Gibraltar, that is a place to hang out, shoot some pool and relax.

Blue is a pool hall...actually there are two...one downtown and one in Recoleta...open all night...modern and sleek...The one downtown is on Reconquista.

Asia de Cuba in Puerto Madero near the Hilton Hotel is a club that serves food early and then becomes a night club till dawn.

The Shamrock Bar in Recoleta is a good location for college age people...
Mint is another night club....Pacha is good....

There are also entire zones that are youth oriented: Las Canitas is full of bars and clubs, as is the area around Plaza Sorreno in Palermo Viejo/Hollywood....

You may be disappointed with the crowds in January though since it is summer break time and a lot of students are out of town on vacation...

Thanks so much Drd for your great response. You gave me plenty of options to pick from.
About the time of travel, is the summer a better time to go, since it's winter in argentina and there are more locals and less tourists? Actually I prefer cold weather myself.
One more question, is Las Canitas close to Recoleta?
What Are some other big fun cities in argentina besides BsAs?

Thanks,

Annie

Las Canitas is on the border between Palermo and Belgrano, about a 6 or 7 peso cab ride from Recoleta. There are tons of places to go in Las Canitas, but the Soul Cafe is a good starting place.

As long as you are in Recoleta, try the Shamrock Bar on Rodriquez Pena and the Gran BAr Danzon on Libertad between Arenales and Santa Fe.

About the weather: You are right....during our winter/their summer a lot of students are out of town vacationing....and during our summer/their winter, the student oriented night life improves considerably.

Other big, fun cities...I like Mendoza a lot (not really a big, big, city....but close to a million in the area....all those wineries, a big casino, and cool B&B's and Hostals...

I went to Las Canitas last night with two friends from Buenos Aires....We ate in the Soul Cafe, which has great Sushi as well as more traditional Argentine fare....then strolled around the neighborhood.....on a Wed. night everything was packed.....bars, restaurants, dance clubs....and the median age is clearly college and young professional.....amazing neighborhood...and clearly not a tourist in sight,,,other than drdawggy, who stood out as an overaged Yanqui.....

I'm glad to hear you had a good time. I can't wait to visit BsAs. I'm really torn between Argentina and Russia. But, I have a soft spot for all things spanish or italian. I hope to visit soon...Really happy to hear there weren't too many tourists.
Thanks for all the info.
