flights in mexico: book now or there?

My husband and I are going to be in Mexico for two weeks in late February. Since we do not have a lot of time, we want to fly between PVR and MEX, MEX and GDL, and GDL and PVR, to maximize our time in the various cities.

I have checked out the Mexican airline sites (Aerolitoral, Mexicana, Aeromexico) and found that we can do these trips booking on the internet directly with the airlines, for $145-$170 each person depending on the trip, one way. Is this a good deal? Should I book these flights now, or wait until we get to Mexico? Obviously, we would like the best times, leaving just after checkout and arriving just at checkin!

Why I am asking, when we were in Turkey 3 years ago it was really cheap to fly, but 20% cheaper to book there and you could do 2 days ahead and get 2 seats together.

For those who think we are nuts flying, 13 hours on bus or car from PV to MC, versus and hour and twenty minutes! We don't have much money, but we have even less time.

For Suze and SusaninToronto, I now you will be thrilled to know, Casa Andrea, Hotel Catedral, and Quinta Don Jose are booked! We were at first intensely screwed by flight availability, and almost did Sayulita (next time) and missed MC, but Casa Andrea had a cancellation, so we got our dates. San Sebastian, Red Cabbage, Malecon, shopping, a day drive south of PV, Walking forever in MC Centro Historico, Bazar del Sabato and San Angel, Teotihuacan and Guadalupe, and the Tonala Thursday market are in the plans. We are staying in Tlaquepaque in GDL, Susan! (FYI, my middle name is Suzan, so both of you are kindred spirits).

For everyone else, please answer my question re: should I book now, or wait until I get to Mexico to get the best prices.

In my experiences, it makes little difference where you book. You might also check Aviacsa's website--they are a Monterrey carrier with very good service and good prices--if they happen to go where you want to go!

I have traveled by air many times in Mexico and it reall does not vary much when or where you buy the ticket. For sure you will save the U.S. state tax if you buy the ticket in Mexico. If money is also an issue the leg from GDL to PVR should be done by bus. Very affordable and convenient. Only 3 hours.

I'm from Canada, so are there taxes? I have not seen them when I have requested fares in $Cdn.

Will check Aviacsa.

In many trips to Mexico I have not seen that flights are any cheaper booking them there. In fact, I once tried to book a flight from Oaxaca City to Huatulco and it was substantialy than if I had done so at home. To check what your price is going to be in Mexico, look at the Mexicana's and Aeromexico's sites for travel within Mexico. All this said, I have seen some bargins in Mexico City such as super cheap flights to Tijuana. I have never seen deals to destinations I wanted to travel to in Mexico.
