Favorite restaurants and food safety in Ixtapa/Zihua

Hello Fodorites!

My kids and i are going to an AI in Ixtapa over new year's with my extended family. athough it's AI, the four of us will venture out and sample some more local spots in either ixtapa or zihuatanejo. Can you be our wise guide and suggest both cheap lunch options and also exceptional place(s) for dinner? we're more likely to have dinner at the resort with the other 19(!) members of our party than lunch.

also: i haven't really read any posts here about fresh fruits and vegetables and water recommendations. i'm pretty sure the resort will be no problem, but is ixtapa as "safe" as puerto vallarta food-wise?

First the Restaurants are far safer then the buffets at any of the AIs.
My favorites are
Marina Café (Joe's)
Lety's
Chendos
Publelitos
Memos
Casa Viejo
All in Zihua & none over $15 US. Most under $10.
For a real Mexican Experience a meal in Pozole alley in Zihua at The Rico-Mar. A full service café with full meals for $3 US or LESS.
PS Drink only bottled water. If you but fruits/Veggies at the market they do need to be soaked in Dynel. In Cafés perfectly safe. Standards as high as PV where I have been going for 25 years & Zihua for 15.

agree with Stewbear. Love Mexico and while Zihua isn't necessarily my favorite destination in Mexico, it has amazing food, and I never felt any tummy distress like I did in PdC or PV.
Try any of the beach cafes on La Ropa, any of the restaurants downtown.

ps: check out tripadvisor's restaurant section. I enjoyed Paty's and los Braceros, as well as Il Mare.
