This is a fun exercise. Ask a dozen people, and get a dozen answers! There are no wrong answers, just personal preferences.
I love Monteverde, Arenal, Tortuguero, and just about anywhere on the Osa.
We also visited the Orosi Valley a couple of years ago, and were fascinated by the history. This region also includes the Tapanti National Park, the best kept secret in Costa Rica. I want to go back to explore this area further.
Hope this helps! Let me know if I can offer any more advice.
Warm Regards,

I like the whole Central Valley because all the major sites are close to each other and you can see a lot.
That does not mean I do not like Monteverde( for example)...but when I think of driving that road...in a light misty rain...I get the chills !!

We went to Costa Rica a few months ago on our honeymoon. It was our first time and we fell in love with the country. Our favorite place was Mal Pais. The hotel Casa Chameleon was the highlight of our honeymoon. We loved the beaches we walked to. They were all so beautiful. The jungle walks in the morning were incredible and that's where we saw the most animals. We also enjoyed Peace Lodge and Arenal.

I'd have to say Arenal. There's so much to do and there's such a draw about the volcano! Tortuguero was also pretty amazing, but I don't know if I'd go back if the turtles weren't nesting. To be honest, out of both trips, there's not a spot I didn't enjoy!
