Exchanging $ airport Cancun?

Do you have to exchange some american $ to pay for the shuttle vans at the airport - I have read the ATM's are frequently broken at the airport. Do they accept American $'s? I keep reading the price is $9 instead of $X Pesos.
Thanks!
Cindy

Most people and businesses in Cancun accept American dollars. I wouldn't exchange at the airport because the exchange rate isn't very good.

I would avoid asking any employees or locals anything at the airport. You will get pinned down for buying a timeshare faster than you can ever imagine. Besides, I never ran into a Mexican yet who refused American $s. You might want to insist on receiving American change though. Ask before you buy. Some hotels will exchange for you, too.

They will accept dollars for the van transfer at the airport. I would try to get pesos from a bank, ATM, or money exchange as soon as possible. (I use the airport ATM's often and have never had a problem)
It is true that most Mexicans will accept dollars but that is because they always come out the winner in the exchange. Use pesos wherever possible and you will almost always be ahead.

I agree with the previous post - we use the ATMs whenever we need to exchange money. We don't like carrying a lot of cash, and being from Canada, we typically don't have USD with us.

It's true that some places will quote prices in USD, but you'll do better with pesos.
