We wore what we wore during the day. The only place where people seemed to be dressed up more was at the restaurants at Si Como No.
I will say that in MA, I saw quite a few young women in pretty sun dresses. Coming from a colder place, it had not occured to me to pack a sun dress, but you might want to, just for something different.
When you're at Tabacon, DO NOT MISS El Novillo. I'ts very close by and very casual and VERY good. Go early in your trip because you may want to go again.

I like to change from my casual flowered hawaiian shirts to a more formal leaf pattern hawaiian shirt.
;-)
Have fun!

In Manuel Antonio, definitely anything goes as it's a beach community. You can dress it up with a sundress and pretty flat sandals. Definitely too warm for long pants but capris are nice. If you are at the beach during the day, purchase one of the colorful beach wraps which can double as a skirt in the evening. Paired up with nice tanktop, it makes a nice tropical outfit. People are dressing up a bit more for SiComoNo and Makanda but nothing more than resort type wear. Enjoy your trip! Lisa in Manuel Antonio

Out of the "tropical" areas I've been to, Costa Rica tourists don't seem to get dressed up in the evenings. You can wear shorts to dinner if you'd like - especially in MA because it's still so warm at night. I did bring a few light skirts though and didn't feel out of place wearing them.

There is an exception to this casual attire. If you opt to stay at one of the more upscale all-inclusives (like Paradisus or Four Seasons), there will be a dress code for dining in the formal restaurants. Women in skirts or long pants or capris, men long pants only. Our experience is that they do not bend this rule!
