Driving to Mazatlan

We're leaving Sacramento CA Sat the 17th of Dec to drive to Mazatlan, Mexico- has anyone done this crazy this recently? Any one want to carivan down? Crossing at Lukeville AZ on the morning of the 19th hopefully.
Any words of where to exchange dollars into pesos, traffic stops, etc?

I wouldn't, beckysbuys, but since you are doing so I hope you are aware you need to purchase Mexican auto insurance in order to legally drive in Mexico. If you don't and if you are in an accident even if the accident is not your fault you will have a huge legal problem.

Wish you a fun and most importantly a safe trip.

Ignore qwovadis, he's a scaremonger, plenty of people driving to and fro, with nary a problem.

We're in mazatlan, trip down was long but no problems! Stayed in Ajo, AZ then crossed the border early the next morning. Immigration and car permit took almost 2 hours, they don't open until 8 so getting there early wasn't a help. Drove to Navajoa- Long day and many crazy sights of vagabonds, horses, cows on the side of the road, harvesting some sort of grain in the median by sickle but no problems. Luckily though we got a green light coming into country because we brought a case of wine and you're only allowed 3 bottles! Next day more tolls and into Mazatlan by 2! Don't be freaked out by the rumors, its an adventure!
