The yourtravelmap site is really great. If you want a paper map, I would use the map produced by mapcr.com You can order it over the internet - it is "plasticized" so will last longer than others and I have found it to be accurate with lots of info. It's about $12 more or less.
Many people who come to Costa Rica rent a GPS along with their rental car. This is another option.

We have used the Toucan Guides _Costa Rica: Waterproof Travel Map of Costa Rica_
which we bought on Amazon for about USD 12,
It is very detailed and at least damp proof. If you buy the map directly from the publisher, you also get the use of an online version that allows even greater magnification. The 2010 version is what is being sold now.
There is a website that will allow you to calculate times and distances at
yourtravelmap.com , but it doesn't have the detail that the Toucan Guides offer.
