Dining at or near Peace Lodge

We're going to be staying two nights at Peace Lodge and wondered what recommendations you might have for dinner. I would think we'd eat at least one night on the property - but wondered if there were another option for the second night. We will have a car.

Colbert's, french restaurant. Do a search here on the forum and it should come up or shillmac or someone else can post directions. Also, keep in mind if you want to, you can order room service at the Peace Lodge from the Trout Bar, it's less expensive, quite filling but not the huge 3 course meal you get at the main restaurant.

We ate at the Trout Bar one night for an early dinner; it was really good - we had homemade chips and guacamole, plus casados, and a couple of Imperials - you eat by the little waterfall outdoors, and there were beautiful fireflies flying around us - much more affordable than the restaurant upstairs, and it was really good. Colbert's gets rave reviews too.

Agree that the Trout Bar had excellent food, very nice eating outdoors and the food was very fresh. We also enjoyed ordering in one night and eating by the fireplace. The ala carte menue has quite a bit to choose from. We also ordered breakfast in one morning in order to enjoy the balcony and view and watch the hummingbirds.

We stayed two nights at the Poas Volcano lodge and ate one night at Colbert's, in part due to the reviews we'd read here. Actually we found Colbert's very odd--we were the only diners there in a large, cavernous room--and this was peak season (February.) The food was just okay, and the place felt cold and a bit creepy. The owner was quite nice but...the whole experience was a bit surreal. Obviously it might have been very different if there were other diners there.

Poas Volcano lodge actually had excellent food but I think the dining room may only be open to guests.

The drive to Colbert is easy. When you exit Peace lodge, turn right onto the road in front of it. When you get to Vara Blanca (gas station at the corner), make a left. Colbert is a short distance down the road on your right. We were there in early December and we were the only diners, too. I thought food was okay.

We also drove pass Chubasco restaurant in Paosito on the main road to Poás. I'd say it's about 30 mins from Peace Lodge.

Chubasco is a good restaurant as well--we've eaten there a couple of times.

I agree Colbert's is a little odd--there have never been more than one or two other diners any time we've been there--and we've been about 4 times. My favorite time to eat there was in the mid afternoon when the sun was out and we had a beautiful view--and a long leisurely lunch. Not another soul that day. We've often wondered how they stay in business!

Maybe it's just differences of opinion (and taste), but we've always found the food to be quite good. Maybe it depends on what you order? I hope you'll try it and offer your opinion!

Have a great trip!
