Hi Patty!!
Most of the weddings are held on the Pacific side of the country...the reason is that in the Pacific there are a lot more options for a beach wedding...the Caribbean is more natural...more rustic places...but do not take me wrong some of the beaches in the Caribbean are just a dream !!!
I can send you later a list of different locations..but to find that "special" place we need the number of people...or a aprox. number.

In Guanacaste...Tamarindo beach is a good beach...Playa Hermosa at Condovac is another good option.
Central Pacific...Villas Caletas and Marriot Los Suenos
Manuel Antonio...Buena Vista Villas, Si Como No...
Let me know about budget...and here at the forum somebody will come with some good ideas as well.

Got married in CR less then 2 months ago (click on my name to find my wedding/honeymoon report...still trying to finish that up), if you'd like further info on what we paid for our wedding of 25 near Jaco feel free to e-mail me: dresgbrat at yahoo.com
there are so many variables with a wedding & everyone's expectations are different
CR had many less expensive options for food, flowers, photos, etc then in the US, but the best bargain we got by far were the fireworks -- only $1000 for 10 solid minutes that were similar to what a town might have for the 4th of July (that would cost you at least $15K in the US)

Just my dos colones, Hotel Sugar Beach would be a great location and probably less expensive. Also it is close to a lot of cool areas for guests to visit.
Villa Caletas would be very nice as well, but certainly more expensive.
Manuel Antonio is VERY popular for weddings, and the prices probably range. There are some nice hotels for $125 per night, others way more expensive, other less. . .
I wouldn't think of Tamarindo as an ideal place. Too commercial, too many people. It's a madhouse these days. Okay for an afternoon visit, though. It certainly isn't very "romantic" there!
Good luck--SO many options!
By the way, Caribbean side too rainy in January. . .or could be.

My husband and I got married in Costa Rica last May and it was the best decision we have ever made. We also did not want to spend a great deal of money and ended up spending less than $9000 on the wedding and two weeks in very nice accommodations with a private driver the entire time. We also hired a wedding planner -

to help us. We had already chosen the location, Villa Caletas, and the wedding planner worked on all the details. I found this to be very helpful because trying to communicate via phone or email with those in Costa Rica was time consuming and, at times, frustrating. We had a lovely ceremony on a private beach below Villa Caletas with a bonfire and beach barbecue. It was relaxing and beautiful. Villa Caletas has many excursion options and being close to Jaco all the guests were able to plan their own adventures without us worrying about it - such a good option. All the guests loved it and could not say enough about the wonderful service, incredible hotel and fantastic experience. Looking back at the pictures brings the most wonderful memories. I wish your son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law an equally wonderful Costa Rican wedding experience!

Our son got married (2 years ago) at Villa Caletas, and it was perfect for us. We didn't have a wedding planner, and the hotel did everything for us. We used the amphitheatre for the wedding, and the private beach for a beach barbeque with bonfire for the rehearsal dinner. We chose Villa Caletas instead of other beach sites because it was the closeset---less than 2 hours from the airport. With the Liberia airport open now, you might have other options.
