Condo/Apartment Rentals

Hello,
we are going to fly into Cancun the last two weeks of Feb. We will likely rent a car and head to Playa Del Carmen, Akumal area. Has anyone used VRBO (or similar agency) to rent a one bedroom condo? If so what has been your experience?
We like to be out and about during the day and eat out then. Have some dinner's in the condo in the evening.
Any suggestions?
Best Regards.

Have not used VRBO, but we have booked hotels and condos in Playa and in Akumal through www.locogringo.com and www.playadelcarmeninfo.com. Both are highly recommended - check them out. If you are headed to Akumal, check ou the one bedroom condo/suites at the Vista del Mar. They are great, you can see the ocean from bed - doesn't get any better than that! Also, they have huge balconies. Vista del Mar is on Half Moon Bay, which is more of a snorkeling beach (no sandy bottom) - but if you have a car, that isn't a problem, you can just drive to Akumal Bay or one of the other beautiful beaches in the area (there are plenty to choose from). Have a great trip.

Thanks PAGirl, appreciate your input. We are leaning toward Playa now or even Puerto Aventuras ... any suggestions in those areas? Will check out locogringo etc., but most times word of mouth is the best. Thanks again.

Beckie,

We have never stayed in Puerto Aventuras but have been there to take a catatmaran trip. Looks nice but not a lot of restaurants and bars from what we could tell (not like they have in Playa). In Playa del Carmen they have a lot of small hotels - our past trips we have always stayed at Hotel La Tortuga (love this place - www.hotellatortuga.com). Great little hotel with a wonderful pool and even swim-up rooms. It is not on the beach but you get daily passes to a beach club that is on the nicest stretch on beach in Playa. We are headed back in November this year and have decided to try a hotel in the north end (which is newly developed) for a change of pace. We are staying at Hotel Villa Amanecer (www.villa-amanecer.com)

If I were to stay on the beach, I would try either Las Palapas or Shangri-La Caribe on the North Beach or Playa Maya in town.

There are so many good restaurants and bars that you definitely miss out if you went all-inclusive. Make sure you check out www.playadelcarmeninfo.com for tons of info on the town and the surrounding area - they also have a very active forum (as does locogringo.com - but they are more oriented toward the area south of Playa del Carmen - which includes Akumal, Soliman Bay Puerto Aventuras).

We travel to the caribbean at least once every year - I like to go somewhere different each year - well that has now turned into something different "every other year" because we love the mayan riviera so much that we end up going back the next year after we try somewhere different. Can't beat it for the beaches, choices of lodging and affordability.

Have a great time where ever you decide to "land"!
