Since we had to cut our trip short last January (visited Arenal,Monteverde,Manuel Antonio)and since I missed spotting the elusive Quetzal last time while in Monteverde,how does this 9 nite itinerary sound?I will be travelling solo in mid-Dec..My main interest is hiking and wildlife viewing,and some more active persuits such as zip-lines,canyoning or kayaking.Any must-dos?
Day 1-arrive San Jose-o'nite Orchideas Inn
Day 2-transfer to Suvegre Mtn.Lodge,o'nite
Day 3-hiking,birding,fishing,o'nite Suvegre Mtn.Lodge
Day4-transfer back to San Jose,fly to Osa-Puerto Jiminez,transfer to Bosque del Cabo
Day5,6,7,-BDC
Day 8-transfer to Iguana Lodge,o'nite
Day9-fly back to San Jose,onite Orchideas Inn
Day 10-back to Canada

Quetzal sightings are almost guaranteed at Savegre - it's one of the best birding lodges in Costa Rica. I'll be there in November - have booked Marino as a private guide who comes highly recommended. Good hiking, horseback riding there, but haven't read anything about any canopy tours.

Do you have your transfer set up to Savegre? We are using Leo Rodrigues based on the recommendations on this forum.

I think it sounds great. We did an early morning birding tour with Carlos at BdC that was great if it interests you.

Hope you get to see the quetzals at Savegre. We were lucky enough to see them in Monteverde - really gorgeous. We even saw one while we were ziplining.

Thanks colibri and VG for the great advice.One other question came to mind.What does anyone know about experiencing the bioluminescence in the Gulf Dulce?Does this phenomina have anything to do with tides,or the full moon,or anything like that?

One other comment on Savegre - not sure if you are driving yourself but do leave San Jose area early as the Interamerican Highway often fogs up by noon and driving can be a bit hairy. If you are interested in hummingbirds, stop by Paraiso del Quetzal at the 70km marker on the Interamerican. It's a restaurant and cabins run by the Serrano family, offers guided hikes to see quetzals, but best of all, there were swarms of fiery-throated hummingbirds coming to their feeders off the back deck in February. I could have stayed for hours and we are having Leo stop there on the way to Savegre. Also La Georgina soda around the Cerro de la Muerte has great hummingbird viewing.
