mature couple mid 50's looking for relaxing vacation- i see good reviews for club med ixtapa-- but, is it more geared to families?

i went to club med ixtapa when i was a kid! what memories...club med always seemed very geared to families in general to me...thanks for bringing back ixtapa memories.

It is very family oriented. Las Brisas is excellent for a relaxing location. A bit isolated ( not as much as Club Med) but a cab ride of 50 pesos or less to most places including Zihuatanejo.

We've been to that resort three times in the last year. It is a great resort but might not be for you and your wife. It is family oriented from little babies up to teens.

If you're cool with that, then you might enjoy the other aspects of the resort. The beach is very swimmable (which isn't true for the beach at Las Brisas), the food is usually very good, the staff is friendly, there are plenty of things to do such as water sports and multiple aerobic classes(or trapeze if you're willing.) The refurbished rooms are better than we expected.

But, given that it's a family resort you likely won't have much in the way of quiet around the pool area. You can definately find quiet spots on the beach.

If you don't mind the typical Club Med activities like periodic dance routines and entertainment that features the staff, you might have a great time.

The weather in Ixtapa is spectular starting around the beginning to middle of November. The people who work there told me they'd go months without a cloudy day. Given that you're not traveling with school aged kids, you could find the place really to yourselves in early November and December before the schools take a break.

When schools are out in the US or when it's a National Holiday in Mexico (and Canada to some degree) the resort will be croweded.

If it's peace and quiet you want and are less concerned with clubs, bars, etc. you might want to check out Huatulco, Mexico. The Camino Real Zaashilla hotel is beautiful and extremely reasonable for what you can get. There are four or five other hotels in the area so you can vary your dining options. There are some small towns nearby and a few spots on the beach for dinner. If you're into outdoor activities there are plenty of things to do. A pretty low-key resort that never really became as popular as expected. The upshot though are hotel rooms that are spectacular for rates hard to beat at a more popular resort.
