We have been to both and preferred Panama. We were there last month and saw a number of quetzels, including two nesting pairs. One of the reasons we preferred Volcan Baru was that we stayed in Bouquete, where we felt there was much more to do than when we stayed at Monteverde.

Add me to the Panama fans. There is a very nice hotel, the Panamonte, in Boquete. Charming. A wonderful hotel in Volcan is Los Quetzales. The owner, Carlos, will bend over backwards to make it an unforgettable trip.

We are considering a swing through parts of Panama next year from Costa Rica. Would you say that the Volcan Baru/Bouquete area in general is a good birding place?
