Booking the day before through your hotel or an operator in town will work fine. They typically bring everyone into LaFortuna (tour operator's office) and then a group of you board a big bus. Usually stop for soda on the way and lunch on the way back.

Bring a camera with a zoom lense. It is a fantastic trip.

We just booked it through our hotel when we arrived. I'd highly recommend using Sunset Tours; they did an amazing and impressive job.

I liked Sunset Tours as well.

Since you are going in high season, why not book in advance a make sure that the tour is not already full?

We went just last week. I booked in advance with Sunset Tours -- yes, they are great, our guide was wonderful. This was an amazing experience and one of the highlights of our trip. Apparently almost everyone goes in the morning but I have two teenagers and it's hard to get them up early so we went in the afternoon and it was just my family on the tour.

Just know that it is a LONG drive from Arenal -- they say 90 minutes but I think it was at least an hour more than that. The entire trip took 8 hours and only about 2.5 of those were on the boat. However, it was still well worth it.
