I was horribly remiss in leaving off an 's' at the end of the 40-50-60 reference. With an 's' added, reading 40-50-60s you would be included. Funny how one little letter can make a difference!

Hello all. First let me say thank you all for your wonderful help.
I guess this is my next wacky question.
This morning I received an email that is akin to Dinner:Impossible; or rather cocktail party impossible. I am praying that you will be able to point me in the right direction.
You see, I run a non-profit organization (in the truest sense of the word, LOL) and I have been requested to see if I can arrange an impromptu cocktail reception of some sort lasting maybe 2 hours, in the early evening of either October 4 or 5.
The most difficult part of this task is that I will not know how many people would attend. Doctors in town for the convention would just kind of "drop by." I can't imagine it would be more than 25 people or so. I am thinking an open bar featuring some local wines and have the ability to serve some kind of amuse busche or appetizers even though the number of guests is unknown. And I have been asked that it be conveniently located, which I cannot define at the moment.
Shake, shake, shake... Dan, do you have any suggestions? I've been pondering how I would do this in my own city, let alone someplace I have never been! Perhaps a private room in a restaurant, and say prayers that people show up? I've never thrown a party with no guests, LOL. A fate worse than death!!
Is this Party:Impossible?? Any insight is appreciated, and I hope this is not inappropriate to ask in this forum.

Perhaps a BA travel agent with knowledge of hotels and restaurants might be able to set something up for you. It's not your typical travel agent request, but I would not be surprised if Cintia Stella <[email protected]> of WOW! Argentina could do this for you. Ask her!

Though I have never been inside, Ive seen the facade and know the area pretty well.
That is the heart of Cañitas, an area favourite for its night life, restaurants, shops, 2 blocks from a small shopping
Many locals like me prefer Cañitas much more than Palermo, which is the favourite among tourists.
It is true you need a cab to go downtown and it will be u$s 4 the ride.
Fifty mts away from the B&B there is a popular Ave. No subway near though.
There are only 2 other hotels in the area: Casa Cañitas and Finisterra.

Las Canitas is a few blocks of reeeally good restaurants ( Restaurant Row) ..it is a tiny section but you can find a great place to eat every night!
Novocento is one that I can think of the name of right now..sigh...bad memory
You will be between Belgrano and Palermo..I think taking a taxi will be your way to get around..

I don't think it's an impossibility at all. If it's just a cocktail party, there are plenty of bars and clubs, which, since half of them don't normally open until midnight, and the other half open at 11:45, can probably make arrangements for something earlier. A friend of mine had her birthday party at a place called Ocho-Siete-Ocho (878, the address along Calle Thames), with about 50 people - drinks, hors d'oeuvres (not passed, just laid out on lounge tables), and that was alot of fun. I'm sure there are plenty more.
I don't know offhand of any restaurants that have a private space that big that could handle something like that, but they probably exist...

Ooh, I just thought of something right after posting that - since you mentioned wines... you might contact Alex at Terroir wine shop (www.terroir.com.ar) - I think he even posts occasionally on the board here. He's got a tasting room in the back of a beautifully laid out shop, and it might be the sort of thing that he could handle with someone bringing in hors d'oeuvres or local snacks...

Thanks Scarlett. Monica at the Casa Bloody Mary sent me a map of Las Cañitas and it looks kinda perfect. She also said she can book me into the hair salon of my choice and has recommended on the list from tripadvisor (not Edward S.), Giordano, and also another that is two blocks from the hotel, name unknown. I'll probably throw all caution to the wind and stay close to home. I'll be sure and check out Novocento!
(An aside here: I got sidetracked from my mission of reading and responding to your posts because Fodor's home page has a link to chef Thomas Keller's opinions on where to drink, eat and play in Napa. Now, I know this is the wrong forum, but I have to go off topic here for just one moment. My meal at Keller's "French Laundry"was, hands down, the best I have ever had in my entire life! Unforgettable! Do everything you can to experience this if you go to Napa and plan your trip around your reservations, which are taken three months out I think.)

Michelle: I can eat pretty well maybe about THIRTY times at my favorite restaurant, with the money Mr. Keller charges.
I like to dine early (for Argentina), so I just drop in and I'm welcomed with open arms, we have a great dinner, I joke for a while with the owner, get a discount for paying in cash, etc. Reservations? Forget it!

I do know exactly what you mean. There is no substitution for that kind of meal. I just cannot describe the culinary experience I had at the French Laundry. It is like those silly commercials: priceless. (LMAO, besides, I did not have to pay!)
