Bosque Del Cabo and Ants

I know there are tons of Bosque Del Cabo fans out here and we are going in two weeks so I monitor reviews. Here is the first bad experience I have heard about.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...untarenas.html

Looks like the problem was with army ants and the people didn't get the kind of treatment that they felt they deserved. Obviously, this is one person's opinion. Just thought I would share in case anyone else had any ant stories.

Funny I too was just over on TripAdvisor and spotted this report.

Yes, everyone's opinion and experiences are different. Our's with Bosque was like heaven! The food, the owners, the staff, other travelers, our room, the grounds - it was a totally awesome experience.

The cabinas are open to the elements, therefore ants, lizards, and such can get in.

We had little crabs on our porch that could not get off. So each morning we took the broom and let them crawl onto it and then set them back into the grass. They never got into the room that would have taken a climb.

One bit of advice! Don't keep food in your room, all sorts of insects can seek it out. If you need snacks keep them in airtight containers and don't drop crumbs on the floor.

Hmmm. I guess no place will ever have a 100% satisfaction rate. Part of the problem I have with tripadvisor is it's a very one-sided account and no further questions can be asked of the OP. The poster does say 'the bad thing' about the garden cabina is the long walk and then goes on to say he knew about it. I have to disagree on the part where he says everything is very close and people can be seen & heard all around you. All the cabinas have a little turn to them, to look into someone cabinas you'd have to be wandering around their cabina. I'm not one to parade around in my pj's but I felt comfy in the early am to go out & lounge on the patio & deck in them before coffee. And I don't find the 7pm dinner unreasonably late or 'like a cruise ship social scene'. Couples who want to dine alone are more than welcome to. Honestly I always look forward to the dinners & the talk; you get to meet a diverse group of people and find out what they all did & saw that day. I've met travelers from Hong Kong, France, Ireland, UK and all over the US there; if you don't want to socialize you're not forced to.

About the army ants - I feel bad for the person, I really do, must've been awful. On the other hand, the little I do know about army ants is that they 'raid' places and it lasts a couple of hours and then they're gone and you have a bug-free house. Nature being what it is, I really don't know of any way to actually stop them. I wouldn't want to sleep there while they were going thru either, but if the place is full I'm sure Kim & Phil worked out the best they could.

The fact that it is the first bad review says it all. It might even be the second or third. The point is that there are probably close to 1,000 people a month that stay there during the busy times. A bad review says more about the one or two people who write them than about the place being reviewed when most of the reviews are good.

Those of us that use forums like Trip Advisor or even here at Fodor's take the isolated one or two bad reports in stride, particularly if most of the others are glowing. I don't consider Trip Advisor reviews as being one sided. People are going to come on here and complain about places too. Trip Advisor just makes it easier to find them rather than having to search for them through hundreds of postings like here. If you don't like what they wrote you can write your own good review and hope that others look at the reviews as a whole which is what should be done. You can't please all of the people all of the time. Granted those army ants can be frightening and I certainly wouldn't want to sleep in a cabin with them although I love them during the day because they bring in some great birds. It wouldn't be good business for anyone to keep empty cabins (particularly since they are so limited to begin with) just in case a problem might arise. There is always going to be some risk to traveling to a rainforest where there are some unpleasant things. Rainforests are known for the good, the bad, and the ugly. That's why we visit. Some people just aren't as comfortable with that environment as they think they might be once they get there.

We have stayed there many many times and never had a problem other than a short in the lighting putting us in the dark while staying at Casa Teka. They didn't have the hanging bridge then and it was a lot further to walk to get back there at night by the road. I don't recall hearing a generator. That may be new. Most of the electricity is generated naturally there by hydro or the sun.

As tully said, you do have the option to sit by yourself. We enjoy finding out what people have done and what they have seen. Happy hour is fun but you aren't forced to go to it. I haven't noticed any noise from the bar at night or a lack of privacy. I suppose if you want to do some nude sunbathing this wouldn't be the place but I have seen houses closer in the states than those cabins.

They are curious creatures - army ants. Pretty amazing at what they do, if you find that kind of stuff interesting. I read somewhere that in Brazil, they are welcomed as a house-cleaning source to get rid of pests!!

They can be pretty devastating, but there really isn't anything you can do about them without a flamethrower once they come - except leave. I'm kind of up in the air as to whether I agree with the owner's customer service decision, but I think you take your chances in the rainforest and it doesn't sound like the TripAdvisor poster was prepared for that.

Can anyone tell me, how common is it to have army ants come through? I'm really looking forward to experiencing BdC!!!

I agree with all the comments here. You definitely can't control nature and all vacations have an element of risk let alone ones to the rain forest.

I for one wouldn't go anyway without checking the reviews on Tripadvisor. I have found great places to stay in Yellowstone/GT, Baja and now, hopefully, Bosque by reading the reviews there (this forum is the best when it comes to specific questions and answers though).

I am taking a macro lens with me to BdC so maybe I can get a picture of one of those pesky army ants...
