Best place to snorkel the reefs

We live on the Texas coast and (thanks to my 17-year-old daughter) are growing more and more intrigued with the idea of snorkeling among the reefs. It is a deep desire of hers (due to her aquatic science teacher). Her brothers and I are ready to support and enjoy the experience with her. We would so appreciate if you would share the places, routes, & experiences you've had in order to guide us in this new-to-us venture.

The best snorkeling in Central America is off the coast of Belize.

Haven't been to Roatan or Bonaire, also mentioned as a top spot, but Belize offers very good snorkeling out of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

Also, do not overlook Mexico on the Riviera Maya, particularly the area around Akumal, south of Playa del Carmen. It is less expensive than Belize, and easy to get to.

We've snorkelled off Cozumel, Belize, Roatan and Australia. The nice thing about Cozumel and Roatan was that we could go snorkelling off the beach and not have to take an excursion. We were just in Roatan in April and really enjoyed it.

We're hoping to go to Roatan in the Spring, and have lot of questions. Would it be possible for us to "chat" one-on-one or by phone?

Lucy55, was your question directed at me? If so, can you post an email address where I can contact you? I'd be happy to talk.

We spend each winter in Cozumel and have also snorkeled in Belize, Roatan, the Grendines, Caymens, St. Martin, Barts, Kitts, the Great Barrier reef in Australia, Tahiti, and Thailand.

The absolute best was Tahiti with the Barrier Reef a close second for beauty, but not for ease of access. The Pacific beats anywhere in the Atlantic hands down for amazing coral and creatures, but its a long, expensive flight. In the Caribbean, I would say that Roatan was our favorite for beauty and easy shore entrance into the underwater world.

Lucy55, I sent you an email and identified Fodors in the subject line, just in case it ends up in your spam folder.
