best hotels in el centro/recoleta

Hello Wise Travelers,
My 19 yr. old son and I will be in Buenos Aires for 7 nights this December. We need to be near Puerto Madero but don't need to stay there necessarily. If it's advisable, we're just as likely to use the subte as a taxi.

I'm so excited about the trip but not much is available as the date is coming soon. How about;

The Golden Tulip
Cambremon Hotel
Melia Buenos Aires
De la Paix

any other suggestions for hotels around $100-150 US?

Thanks in advance for answering the posting!

From among the hotels you have listed the best bet is the Melia. To check out other options....plug in your dates on www.sidestep.com
for available options in your price range. Hotels rates may vary considerably depending on time of year and occupancy.

On my last trip in Sept. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express (US100) and the Plaza Marriott (US110--I found this rate by phoning the hotel direct. It was not available on any website).

I like the Regal Pacific but using mid-December rates I could not find anything for less than US185. I have paid around US120 when I have stayed there.

Using Dec.15-22 (since I did not know your exact dates)....here are a few options I found on sidestep...

Sheraton Libertador (newly remodeled).US 128
Intercontinental US 159
Argenta Tower US 121
Elevage US123
Howard Johnsons Plaza US120
NH Jouston US 135 (very convenient to Puerto Madero)
Also, check the NH Lancaster (remodeled historic hotel that should be open this month)
Esplendor US132
Dazzler Tower US120

I have never stayed in the Cambemon...The Melia is a nice option...if you are talking about the Golden Tulip Savoy, it is a bit further from Puerto Madero than any of the other options you have listed. I do not know anything about the De la Paix.

Hope this helps....

I just read your earlier post...which emphasized vibrant and included Recoleta as well as centro...and specified the week after Christmas....
Availability is very tight during that week...most of the hotels I mentioned earlier do not show availability during your time period. The Melia is an established choice and the Cambremon looks nice, although I do not like its location as much as the Melia....

Hotels that are vibrant...you might check with them direct to see it they have rooms....

Esplendor or Dazzler Tower. The NH Lancaster fits this description as well..since it is new, it may have rooms available....

Please let us know what you decide and your review....

it's been a week since the esteemed drdawggy's last response. in that time, i had to cancel and then, miraculously, it's back on!! so, now the real scramble.

the following hotels have availability, any thoughts or comments?:

American Buenos Aires Park $131
Dazzler Suites Arroyo $90
La Naciones $98

to recap, we'll be there a week, and need to be near puerto madera.

thanks!

I have never stayed in the Amerian, but its location on Reconquista is very near Puerto Madero. I have walked by this hotel several times and the web site photos appear to be accurate...at least for the public areas.

Las Naciones is a bit further away (though by no means distant from Puerto Madero) on Corrientes, a very busy and noisy street. The hotel itself appears in need of a makeover, just from my observations of the public areas. Many of the rooms here are owned by individuals and rented by the hotel...quality may vary from room to room....

Dazzler Arroyo Suites. Good location but mixed reviews about this hotel, which Dazzler purchased a couple of years ago. I have not stayed there but I have read reviews since Dazzler took over....some like it, some do not.

A far better choice Than the Arroyo Suties in my opinion is the Dazzler Tower hotel on Reconquista...it is closer to Puerto Madero and newer.

Keep us posted about your experiences....

Another thought: Have you thought about renting an apartment for the week? You could probably rent a one or two bedroom apartment for the same or less as a hotel?

bytargentina.com and apartmentsba.com buenosaireshabitat.com receive lots of positive reviews. I have used apartmentsba before and was pleased with the service.

also, you might try contacting hotels directly to determine availability and best rates for your dates.

thanks drdawggy for the replies:

i have thought about renting an apartment. i like the idea of more space for a longer stay. but, i wonder if i wouldn't miss both the hotel service and advice. also, we will be running to and from athletic events and want to use the shuttle service being provided at the large hotels nearby. intriguing, though!

hello again!

well, booking a hotel during the very busy week between xmas and new years was quite the challenge!

i am holding reservations for both Nh Lancaster and Melia Buenos Aires Park Hotel. Both seem pretty convenient to the Sheraton (where my kids participating in the international sports event will be). The difference in price in $231 total.

Any preferences?
