Belize City

I have a day in Belize City while I wait for my tour group. Can anyone recommend anything to do that isn't too far? Also, is it safe to go out for dinner by myself?

The Belize Zoo is maybe 45 minutes away and very worth a visit; you could spend the night there and get to do a night tour. With a private driver you might fit in the zoo and the Community Baboon (howler monkey) Sanctuary or choose between; there are places to stay at the CBS, too.

Hi

I ended up spending two nights in Belize City in order to do tours from there to Altun Ha and the Community Baboon Sanctuary. While in Belize City, I enjoyed the Belize Museum--it's quite small but I was glad to spend an hour there. Maybe you could try a traditional Belizean lunch (love Belizean stewed chicken!) at nearby Nerie's after? I appreciated the picturesque harbour too, although at times it was tough to admire contemplatively due to the fairly regular disturbance of people approaching selling things or otherwise hoping I'd give them a bit of money, particularly when in the immediate vicinity of the Fort George Tourism Village or Swing Bridge. There are recommendations about avoiding walking around the south side of the Swing Bridge at night that I didn't test out. I did however walk at night from my hotel (the Great House) to Celebrity's Restaurant--don't know how advisable that was but was actually kind of a pleasant stroll along the Caribbean. Many advise taking a taxi at night though. Belize City may have a certain amount of dilapidation and be kind of intense but despite it all, I left somewhat charmed.

Could you tell us exactly how much time you have? When do you arrive in BC, and when do you meet the group? And what's included in the tour? Then I can give better advice.

If you have time, you can go to one of the cayes for the day -- Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye. Fly (15 minutes each way, but expensive), or go by water taxi (60 to 90 minutes each way, but cheap).

Lamanai is a good Maya site, and a great way to spend a day -- you can go on your own.

You can go to the Belize Zoo by bus for about BZ$3 or $4 each way. Let me know if you need more info.

If you want to stay in the city, I have a walking tour of Belize City. It includes the Belize Museum, St John's church, the House of Culture, Swing Bridge -- that's about it.

If you go out at night, use taxis. I would not walk around in areas where there are no other people.
