Barcelo Maya Resort

Does anyone have information on the Barcelo Maya Resort?
How is the beach, the food, and the location?
Is there snorkeling off of the beach?
How far are you from other hotels or town?

We stayed there a few years ago, and overall did enjoy it. The beach is very good, and there is snorkelling off a dock on one end of the beach. If you brig bread in the water, the fish will come right at you. The town and other hotels are maybe a 10 minute taxi ride away. The closest town is Puerta Adventura, which is more of a manmade tourist town. Not much Mexican character. Playa Del Carmen is a better town (may 15-20 min).

There really isn't much of anything within walking distance. The resort itself though is huge, and there were never waits at the tennis courts, water sport rentals and there was always chairs available in shady areas at the beach and pool.

As far as the food goes, I have yet to go to a AI with great food. The food was decent there. You have to walk around the buffet area to make sure you see eveything that is avilable. I found that the stations where food was cooked fresh was th best. I remember in the mornings they'd have baskets of breads and danish, but if you walked up to the main buffet fresh crossiants were were served right out of the oven.
