Backpacking, cultural experience around Puerto Vallarta
3 years ago I took a 2 week trip in Yucatan & Chiapas. I found a cheap flight to Cancun, travelled by bus and stayed in great but economical "posadas" (often under $10). I saw Mayan ruins (Chichen-Itza), stayed in a beach hut (Tulum), went to a nature reserve (Chetumal), saw Flamingos (Rio Lagartos), an underground pool or "senote", the canyon del sumidero, and loved the town of San Cristobal de las Casas.
I am looking for a similar type of trip, but this time landing in Puerto Vallarta... Do the surroundings offer the same potential as my last experience? I must convince my girlfriend if I am to go, so any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

Your best bet here is to stay well away from the tourist areas. There are some great places in the Sierras, San Sebastian, Mascota, Talpa de Allende and Cuale, where you will be lucky to find a tourist. See for more info.
http://vallartainfo.com

Thanks for the very quick responses! I will find out more about the suggestions you have pointed out. I forgot to mention .. my girlfriend studied archaeology: What kind of sites are there in the area (or within an overnight bus ride)?
We're aiming to leave end of October, so we should be there for the day of the dead which is a big bonus too!
Thanks Again
