BA is even more wonderful the 2nd time around
I love BA such a fabulous city! We spent 5 days out of a 2 week trip in Argentina in BAat the beginning for 2 nights and at the end for 3 nights. Didnt do much of anything while in BA, just enjoyed walking around, sitting in cafes, strolling thru the parks, shopping in all the boutiques and eating ice cream and dulce de leche. I apologize to locals if there is a dulce de leche shortage as I think I may have eaten much of your cities' supply.
Stayed in San Telmo at the start and really enjoyed that neighborhood. We sat Saturday in Plaza Dorrego and watched them slowly set up for the fereria on Sunday and watched the tango dancers spin about. We wandered up one street and down another, into one store and then another. Stopped for an ice cream at Freddo's-didnt love it. Had a fabulous dinner at Amici Mei. Then ended the night at some café and watched more tango dancing with some folkloric dancing mixed in. And yes, I did try my hand or rather feet at dancingnot so good. On Sunday, of course, there was the fereria and fun to watch the jammed neighborhood really hopping. Again, we just sauntered about with no goals or destinations in mind. We did check out Confiteria Ideal and loved watching everyone tango. That night we saw the younger generation go at it in Plaza Dorrego. It was amazing to see the difference in the neighborhood on Saturday and Sunday and the difference between the dancers at Confiteria Ideal and in the Plaza that night.. Stayed at Hotel Babel and review is on TA. On Monday we were off to the gorgeous NW.
Nine days later we excitedly landed back in BA and headed for our Hotel in Palermo Soho, the Miravida Soho. And was it hot??? Unrealfelt just like DC in August. Our hotel lost power twice and each time we prayed it wouldnt stay out for any length of time which it did not. Again we spent 3 days wandering and watching and eating and drinkingloved it. We explored Las Canitas and thought that a really nice neighborhood. Saw a tango show at Café Tortini. Just a comment here on prices-4 years ago we paid $2USD to go to Café Tortoni, this time about 70ARD. Had some fabulous meals at Social Parasio, Sirop and Sotto Voce. Good lunches at Bar Uriate and La Cupertina. For ice cream I indulged at Volta and Scannapieco in Palermo at Cordoba 4826 which was heavenly. Then after the rain deluge on Saturday we sadly headed to EZE for our long flight back home. But we shall return
Thanks to all for all your recommendations and advice. We put it to good use.

This trip report is even better the second reading
You did so much in so little time, I am impressed.
I am also lazy so it is easy to impress me lol.
I had heard about the dulce de leche shortage but was more concerned when they ran out of ice cream at Volta...
I have a friend staying right on Plaza Dorrego in an apt, she is happy .. it is so charming and atmospheric there.
We also want to go have drinks at the Miravida and meet the owner, he sounds charming ~
Thanks for posting !

Now wait a minute, Scarlett, I refuse to take responsibilty for shortages at Volta...at Scannapieco, well, that's another matter. James is a sweetheart-you'll enjoy chatting with him.
AV, i sure hope that 3rd time will be soon.
Kodi, I think what's nice about 2nd visits is you sort of have a feel for a city and also don't feel the pressure to see everything. I guess we should be careful and not show up at the same time and truly cause a crisis with the dulce de leche supply!

Not to worry! There will be an alert that will come down from the airlines that you are on your way and extra dulce de leche production will go into effect.
They think of Everything here !
besos!

Scarlett,
Now that we are talking about ice cream can you please tell me good places in the microcenter to get some of that wonderful ice cream? We are staying at the Sheraton Libertador. This will make the hubby very, very happy!!!
I am from the south and I hope you get enough grits to last for a while. I read some posts from another message board.

sylbea, wasn't that just the nicest thing?! what a surprise! and I get to meet her too
Not even my family thought of grits lol...
Everywhere you go, you will see a Munchies, Volta or Freddo and there are others that I can't remember the names of. Not to worry . . I don't know what is close to the Sheraton but I believe there are ice cream places conveniently located everywhere in town
When you feel adventurous.. try the Banana Split, Chocolate Suisse ( this is chocolate, chocolate chunks and dulce de leche) and I don't mind the cherry which really has big chunks of cherry in it.
My ice cream mostly comes from around Recoleta..oh there is a place on Las Heras in Recoleta called Kavanaugh.. he sells very good ice cream too ..
Have a good time !!

Hi yestravel , I have been many times in Buenos Aires and concur with Scarlet that your posting is even better the second reading. Indeed it makes me feel not waiting another second to go to Buenos Aires for the "n" time .
For those visiting for the first, second or "n" time Buenos Aires, there is a wonderful Travelogue posted by Linda and Don, my friends and owners of www.THeTravelzine.com.
They spent in BA a long period of time between Jan-March,
2008 and next year they will be on their way to spend another three months .(Jan-March 2009).
How about that for a second visit !
Although I know Buenos Aires well and initially I have given some imputes to Linda and Don now I check often their Travelogue for additional restaurants and fun places to visit in Buenos Aires. Great pictures too.

Graziella5b, thanks for the website -- love the photo of the tangoing trees.
jodicook, here's my review from TA. if u have specific questions, pls let me know
"If you're looking for a small and charming place to stay...
look no further than the Miravida Soho--we had a wonderful stay there. James and his staff have customer service down pat and are as nice and as helpful as anyone could want. James takes great pride in his new hotel and it shows. We stayed in the suite with its king sized bed for 2 nights and its a lovely room. It faces on the street, but was very quiet when we were there. The room has really dark drapes and sleeping in in the am was blissful. We stayed the last night in room 6 which has a queen bed and is smaller. If you want space, I'd go for the suite.
Really appreciated being able to select a hot breakfast and have it served to me. After many nights of buffet breakfasts this was welcome. Definitely taste the wines he offers at his wine bar. Very good! We also had some empanadas b4 we left for EZE and they were great.
I liked the location of the hotel and its easy walking to bars, shops and restaurants."
