Arenal Volcano

I have been reading on other forums that this volcano has not erupted lately (at least a week) and it erupts a little to a lot every day. There is steam etc going on but no lava. Has anyone heard what is going on there. Are they expecting a real blow out or what? We are going in April and I so much want to see this action from the Volcano.

www.arenal.net

good site to monitor for lava flow and eruption patterns

www.arenalobservatorylodge.com is closest to all the action

but remote and more rustic than www.tabacon.com and

www.lostiguanaresort.com my favs

still great lava views but better rooms springs

AOL too much of an eco-camp vibe for me.

Fine if you want to be closest though.

We just got back from Arenal Observatory Lodge, and apparently there has been nothing going on for 7 months. We were hoping to see lava flow too, but by the time we left, we would have settled for just seeing the volcano.

It's a good thing the Arenal area has developed such an infrastructure for adventure activities, because it the adventure of seeing an erupting volcano currently seems not to be an option. I agree with bd--even seeing the volcano is dicey. It was was enveloped in clouds during our stay in the area. But we loved the Hanging Bridges!

We've been lucky enough to see it on every one of our trips, but it hasn't done anything for months, and sometimes you can go days without even seeing the volcano because it gets enshrouded in the clouds like april mentioned. You wouldn't even know there's a volcano there. We met people on our last trip who didn't even believe the volcano existed because they had been staring into a big fog bank for the entire three or four days that they were there. It's just not a predicable thing; it could pick up any day or be several months before it does anything. Luckily there's tons to see and do in the area. Hope you get to see it; it's really cool if you do.

When I was there, I didn't see any activity but that certainly didn't put a damper on the trip as it was still such a gorgeous area overall, with also plenty of things to do. As people mentioned, you can't count on there being activity there when you go, but I'm sure you'll still have a fantastic time. Arenal was one of my favorite places I visited while studying in Costa Rica.
