Aquila de Osa Inn

I am trying to plan a few days prior to a wedding in Jaco in July. Has anyone been here or in the area? It was recommended by someone who fishes quite a bit but the website seemed to offer quite a bit more with excursions, etc. Would love to hear from anyone that has been there, or recommend something in the area. We have never been to CR but are limited because of the wedding so can only plan 4 or 5 days before or after. Is July a good time for that area or should we be looking elsewhere. I just like the peninsula look instead of being "inland" although not ever being there, these are just guesses on my part. I hope all you CR experts who are so helpful can come up with something I can really get excited about. This lodge did offer flights from San Jose which seemed helpful as we could then fly back and get a car (I guess?) to get to Jaco. Or, should we fly there too? HELP! With Appreciation, D.

My suggestion is to take a water taxi to Playa Montezuma on the Nicoya peninsula, this is a small village with a nice beach and if you want to spend a very romantic time check out the bungalows at this resort, very, very nice. www.ylangylangresort.com Plenty excursion and check out the horseback rides to waterfalls. You won't regret this trip off the beaten path.

I didn't reply initially because it's been several years since we stayed at Aguila de Osa. We enjoyed our three night stay. Went snorkeling on Cano Island one day, hiked in the jungle another. The food was good, the setting is lovely. The rooms weren't fancy, but clean and they did have hot water. Lots of steps.

We flew to Palmar Sur, had a transfer to a little town whose name I've forgotten, then down the river and out onto the ocean by boat. Great fun.

The town JeanH is thinking of is Sierpe to catch the water taxi. Flights also stop in Drake Bay and then a shorter water taxi to A de Osa Inn, I believe, would also be an option.
La Paloma also looks like a very nice lodge in the same area.
We stayed at Cabinas las Caletas which is a more rustic, moderate budget lodge, in their honeymoon private cabin.

Hi:

We were just at Aquila de Osa two weeks ago.
We flew directly to the Drake Bay airstrip (charted a plane via AeroBell but I also saw Nature Air flights there). The lodge sends a van and picks you up and take you over to Drake Bay where a boat from the lodge is wating on the beach. You have to wade out to the boat (ankle/knee deep depending on the waves) and then they take you to the dock at the lodge (5 minutes).

Note that the lodge flys people into Palmar Sur, then van to Sierpe, then boat out to the lodge. With AeroBell we left at 8:30 AM from San Jose, 45 minute flight to Drake, and then out to the lodge.

We spent 4 nights and three full days there. We took one of the trips into the interior of Corcovado Park to Sirena. It's about 1-1.5 hours by boat. A bit bumpy but doable. Saw monkeys,ant-eaters birds, etc.

Went deep sea fishing one day. Landed four sailfish. Others going out the next day landed eoght so the fishing is good.

We did do snorkeling at Cano Islands. Not as nice as other locations in the Caribean, Bahamas but if you have never been in the tropices and want to try it it's OK.

Instead of Cano Island looking back I wish we would have done the mangrove swamp tour. People that went on it said it was great.

If you book the package they by default take you to San Pedrilo vs. Sirena. Closer boat ride and a boit shorter day but people that went on it saw less wildlife.

When you check into the lodge you will
most likely talk toi the general manager Pedro. If you want to do Sirena vs San Pedrilo or mangrove vs Cano Island let thme know up front so they can make plans. They need at least 4 to go to Sirena.

I would also sign up with a night tour with Trace Stice www.thenighttour.com.
Excellant tour and we were able to also see some sloths along with the various insects.
Don't know about getting to Jaco from Drake directly.
