In response to the post above from El Chile:

Puerto Vallarta does not have to be "brutally expensive". I have spent 14 vacations there, so I know what I am talking about. Just don't stay in the high-end resorts or eat in the most expensive of tourist restaurants.

In the Old Town or El Centro areas there are lots of lovely small to medium size Mexican hotels in the $40-95US/night range. Breakfasts $3-5US, lunches $5-7US, dinners $5-20US. Local bus 4 peso, taxi cab within town 25 pesos. Gatorade, beer, soda pop under $1US at a corner store.

My wife and I take our 3 daughters to Cabo every year. Like Cat, we stay at the Finisterra. I think it's the oldest hotel in Cabo, but it is absolutely wonderful. The service is great, the rooms are beautiful, but quaint. We don't really mind the ATVs and Waverunners and stuff, and we have NEVER seen an "oil slick" on the beach -- Playa Medano or elsewhere. We like it a lot, and have learned how to settle in for a long vacation there without spending very much money. Like anything else, you just need to know how to do it. Don't let them scare you away. You can email me if you like.
