I think you can get great rates, will find the good restaurants uncrowded and be able to relax in an unhurried atmosphere.
I'm going back to either Akumal or Isla Mujeres in August.
I love to go during off-season because I don't care for crowds and I get the pick of the resorts for the best prices.

I also love the area in August. Yes, it's very very hot but coming from Texas, I'm used to that. As Diana says, it's cheaper and less crowded, and unless there is a hurricane in the area, the water is the clearest and calmest at that time of year than any other.

Not essential , it's a MUST.Think of hot and muggy , you can go swimming in the ocean or pool at nights for length of time comfortably!I've been to Mexico in August many times for the same reason that it's the cheapest time and it's the same heat here in DC in the summer .
