6 days in Cancun and Riviera Maya end of May

I'm a single woman traveling to Cancun end of May for a wedding. I would like to explore the area of Cancun and Riviera Maya as much as I could for my 6 days of stay. Any suggestions on hotels? Places to stay/visit, things to do? I know 6 days are not too long and I have to dedicate one day for friend's wedding. My friend's wedding is at Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita near, which is one hour south of Cancun.

Here are somethings I'm interested:
1. I would like to go for a few day trips for snorkeling and site seeing
2. I wouldn't mind to stay in an all-inclusive resort for two nights but not the whole trip
3. I would like to check out some quaint local spots and local eateries.

Any help would be appreciated to help me make my itinerary. BTW, this is my first time going to this area.

Thanks,
Cicely

Hi, Cicely, and welcome to Fodor's!

You might want to ask the editors to add a tag for Mexico to this thread. You can do that by hitting the yellow triangle beside the "Report Abuse" label toward the upper right -- you don't need to be reporting abuse to use that method to contact the editors!

You might want to consult a few good guidebooks. Of the half-dozen or so I used when planning my time in the area, I thought the Moon Guide was the best.

Snorkeling options range from novice to advanced, along the reef and even in cenotes. Many people choose to day-trip to, or stay near, some of the wonderful Mayan ruins in the area.

Enjoy!

Zoetry is very nice. Definitely not quaint. A few days there will be very enjoyable.

Thanks. Wish there is a way to add tags by myself.

"Wish there is a way to add tags by myself."

You can -- but only when you first post.

The Zoetry is just outside Puerto Morelos, one of the most 'Mexican' towns along the coast. Puerto Morelos has a small town square with several good restaurants, a lighthouse, and a nice crafts market. The snorkelling is excellent just a offshore. There are plenty of snorkel trips offered in town. There may actually be some snorkelling right from the beach. For an AI geared towards singles, the Royal in Playa del Carmen looks like a good option. The Royal is right in the heart of Playa del Carmen, a very lively little city with a great beach. Further south is Tulum with it's ruins, vast white sand beach and funky downtown. There is so much to do in this part of Mexico - ruins, snorkelling, cenotes, etc. Go to locogringo.com for some helpful info.

Good snorkeling from shore in Akumal for free, Puerto Morelos is also supposed to be good snorkeling. Have stayed in both towns and they are both very nice, hard to go wrong, or you can split your time if you wish.
There are about 4-5 cenotes across from the Barcelo resort near Puerto Aventuras, north of Akumal, most are about $10 admission. Or there is also Dos Ojos.
If you want to see a ruin, Tulum is probably closest and easiest to get to, admission is 59 pesos, and they do not take USD, pesos only.
