There is a train station at the Zurich airport with frequent trains to Basel. Would train travel be a possibility for your group?

I agree. Train would be quick and easy. Not sure about costs. That would depend on numbers.

I have not done this myself, but I have looked into this with Shuttle Direct and Swiss Airport Transfer for someone else. You are looking at something at least 250-300 CHF for 4 (guess since you did not state how many) people. Compare this to just buying a train ticket upon arrival at 37 CHF each (std class) or 148 CHF for four (about half the transfer price.)

With transfer, you will have to prepay, meet the schedule change and cancel terms, and if your arrival gets significantly altered due to weather, equipment, etc. issues, you have to negotiate a new prick up time with the transfer.

There are trains from Zurich airport to Basel hourly without change, or 4/hr more trains with change at Zurich central station. With trains, you make no commitments until you arrive and ride trains that matches your Zurich arrival AFTER your arrival. Also, unlike transfers, you can walk around your seat, use restroom while traveling, etc. The downside is if you are traveling heavy, for example on the way to cruise, it is tougher to move around the station and on train. The Swiss major stations and the trunk line trains are very well designed for people with big luggage, however. I see trains leaving Zurich airport laden with people with huge luggage bound for various destinations.

I disagree that if you have "heavy" luggage that it is harder to move around on a train. You get on board and you store that heavy luggage, usually at the end of the carriage. Some (unfortunately very "It's all about ME") people actually "store" their luggage on trains on the seat next to them. Regardless, you can move around the train IME with little fear of that luggage being taken. Depending on the train there might be only one place aboard to move to: the rest room.

You brought it so I expect most people would say you deal with it also. A shuttle service would help eliminate that "dealing with it" issue I suppose.

Friends of mine have used this Basel airport transfer company before: http://www.transfer-service-ch.com
They offer a Basel airport shuttle to and from anywhere in Switzerland, including Zurich. This would obviously be very comfortable in particular if you're travelling with lots of luggage. I hope this helps!

I understand that people going on a cruise (but no cruises from Basel) might want a lot of luggage. To tour Switz it would seem like overkill - unless VERY trendy ski resorts - and that's not Basel either.

Well, I can truely recommend you a good transfer company. It's called Transferservice Basel (http://www.transferservice-basel.ch) . There you can charter an airport shuttle Basel or you can get an airport taxi Basel. If you wish, you can also hire a limousine Basel, but that is quite exclusive... But if you just want to be taken from Zurich airport to Basel, then why don't you give Transferservice Basel a try?

Max you are not by chance an employee of this company that you are promoting? That's what your post sounds like. Otherwise, why would anyone unearth a thread that is almost half a year old?

There are cruises depart in Basel on the River Rhein down toward Amsterdam ( or Ostende?).

I can't imagine one needs steamer trunks for a river cruise - they wouldn't fit in the tiny cabins.

Still if the OP is taking more luggage than they ant to deal with it seems the extremely expensive transfer services are the best option.

As for Zurich taxis being cheap - the last time I took one it was more than 40 francs from the airport to an airport hotel (for a meeting) - about an 8 minute ride.
