Zurich - Lucerne - Mt. Pilatus Day Trip

I would like to do a day trip from Zurich-Lucerne-Mt. Pilatus, more from the point of getting an introduction to Luerne and visiting Mt. Pilatus. I am aware of this packaged tour for USD $87 per person
http://www.shop.viator.com/brochure/...DE=3885SW304BS
Does any one have an opinion of this tour? Will it be cheaper if I buy train tickets on my own and do the trip? Is there is a separate ticket for Lucerne to Mt. Pilatus and back (using the boat ride).

Any advise is appreciated! I know it is squeezing in too much in a day but we are short on time. Thanks!

Rohit,

We have done that exact trip a few years back by ourselves. We took the train from Lucern to Pilatus and then up to the top. As I recall the cost to the top was about $50, I can't imagine it is cheaper now. By the time you are done paying for transportation you will be pretty close to $87. The trip can be done in a day without problem. It is a fun trip and well worth the time.

Greg

The cost of trip from Lucerne to Pilatus and back was about $50! Is that correct. If so then I also need to add the cost of train travel from Zurich to Lucerne. OR was the $50 the total trip cost from Zurich.

Thanks
Rohit

I think it's easily doable. Have you tried the following site for "golden route" starting Lucerne pier (by the railway station) ?
www.pilatus.ch

And for the train timing/prices,

"easily doable"
I meant doable on your own.

The website you gave say "from USD 87". I hope you would not have to pay more than 87 dollars

Good morning, Rohit
There are two ways of going up or down
to Mt. Pilatus.
1. by boat or rail from the Luzern
Bahnhof to Alpnachstad and then up by
incline railway.
2.By city bus to Kreins and then up by
gondola and cable car to the peak., this one being the faster route. Would
suggest getting into www.sbb.ch. getting
the rail and boat schedules to layout
your route, etc. There can also be
some waits at Alpnachstad during the
heavy touristy months... There are also
two ristorantes atop, one in the old
building but with a very wood terrace..
If cloudy or foggy, don't bother going
up as you can no see anything thru the
clouds. Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..

We did this On june 2, 2003. We just got back from Europe. If you go to the tourist information store in the train station you can buy a ticket. It is 61E (they take credit cards). The ticket cover the boat, the koag train, the gondla down half way, and the smaller two person gondula down to the city then the bus back to Luzern. Just as mention, you have the choice of starting by boat, then train, then gondula and bus back to luzern. Or reverse.

A few notes. If you have a rail pass you get a discount. If you have an available day on a rail pass the boat and bus would be free and you only have to buy the ticket for the train and gondula. It was around 40E (I think).

Also, you can climb it if you want. Buy a round trip ticket for the bus and fullow the trail by the train. It takes most people around 5 hours. More info feel free to email. [email protected] I also have pictures of our day trip.
